Your shop sends email for order results, password resets, sign-up codes and invoices. If mail is not set up, customers cannot reset a password and never see their results by email. This guide connects your shop to a mail service and makes sure the mail arrives.

Where the settings are

In the admin panel go to Email › SMTP Settings. There is one configuration for the whole shop. Next to it, Email › Email Templates holds the text of each mail the shop sends.

1. Choose the mail service

The Mail Service cards fill in the host, port and encryption for you:

  • Gmail / Google Workspace: smtp.gmail.com, port 587, TLS.
  • Outlook / Microsoft 365: smtp.office365.com, port 587, TLS.
  • Yahoo Mail: smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL.
  • Zoho Mail: smtp.zoho.com, port 587, TLS.
  • Brevo, SendGrid and Mailgun: email sending services built for this job.
  • PHP Mail: your server sends the mail itself, with no sign-in.
  • Custom: your own host and port, for example your cPanel mailbox.

2. Enter the login

  • Email Address: the address the mail account signs in with. Mail is sent from this address, under your shop's name. Brevo, SendGrid and Mailgun give you a username to put here instead.
  • Password: for Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and Zoho this must be an app password, not your normal account password.

Getting a Gmail app password

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification on the Google account.
  2. Open the Google account's Security settings and create an App password.
  3. Paste the 16-character password into the Password field.

Using your cPanel mailbox

Mail from an address on your own domain, such as support@yourshop.com, looks more trustworthy than a Gmail address.

  1. In cPanel, create the mailbox under Email Accounts.
  2. Open Connect Devices for it to see the outgoing server, usually mail.yourshop.com, and the SMTP port.
  3. In the shop choose Custom and enter that host and port. Port 465 uses SSL and 587 uses TLS. The encryption follows the port by itself.
  4. Enter the full email address and the mailbox password.

3. Send a test mail

Settings that look right can still fail, so the screen has a Send Test Mail button. Use it after every change. If it fails, the error usually names the problem: a wrong password, a blocked port, or a host that does not answer.

4. Keep mail out of spam

Mail that arrives in spam is almost as bad as mail that never arrives. Click Check DNS & Connection. It checks the host, the port, the login and your domain's SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. On cPanel, Email Deliverability can usually install the missing records for you with one click.

Common problems

  • "Authentication failed" or error 535: wrong password, or a normal password where an app password is needed. The password was also changed on the mail account but not in the shop.
  • Timeout: the host blocks outgoing SMTP on that port. Try 587 instead of 465, or ask the host to open it.
  • Test mail arrives in spam: fix SPF, DKIM and DMARC as above.
